Peaks
Peaks Mt. Pierce, Mt. Eisenhower (attempt), NH
Trails
Trails: Crawford Connector, Crawford Path, Webster Cliff Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Monday, March 12, 2018
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Only 3 cars in a large lot at the Crawford Connector. Don't forget to pay the $5 fee if you don't have a sticker;-)
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow - Drifts
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes, Light Traction, Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Uneventful except that 2 or 3 crossings had become gullies, with snow melting over the stream, while accumulating on either side. Not a problem for boots, but awkward for snowshoes
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Only one significant duck under. With snow depth and my large pack, it was a crawl-under both directions for me.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: None seen, heard or observed, unless it was a dog that peed in the middle of the trail on Crawford Path. I hope it wasn't a human...
Bugs
Bugs: None, not even snow fleas...
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: A knitted balaclava thing was hanging on the kiosk when I returned

Comments
Comments: Great day for a snowshoe hike. Met 13 people, but only 1 or 2 with snowshoes. There were a few sections that would've been better with at least microspikes.
Crawford Path was perfectly packed and cleared, up to the junction with Webster-Jackson, just below Pierce. From there up to Pierce's summit, there was significant drifting and obscuring of the trail. I followed postholes for part of the way, and they probably weren't on the trail. It was easier descending.
I added "Eisenhower (attempt)" because I had a lengthy conversation with a hiker who'd been to Eisenhower, breaking trail on Crawford Path all the way. He talked about struggling with "three foot cornices." So with additional snow, this route would be particularly difficult, even more so than the short stretch up to Pierce's summit.
