| Comments: |
FR92 had a hard packed snow path. The Garfield Trail up to Thompson Brook was bare ground and a thin layer of frozen slush. Above the brook crossings the trail was more consistently packed snow and frozen slush overlain by loose snow although there were some small bare ground with standing or running water. The steep Garfield Ridge Trail leading up to the summit was mainly snow covered (not icy). I used microspikes for the entire ascent. I used trail crampons on descent back to Spruce Brook although microspikes should work. The conditions will change by Wednesday based on the latest forecast for a mid-week storm. The bushwhack to Garfield Pond was not broken out.
There were many hikers on the trail today including a couple who were engaged on the slopes of Mt Garfield. Almost no wind at the summit and some decent views although the peaks over 4,700 feet were in clouds. |
