i rolled the dice on the weather forecasts, and won, big time! no wind on the rock pile and the sun even came out, though all views were blocked by fog and clouds.
picked up jewell after picking my way thru the construction and climbed over the rails. jewell trail has trace snow. micros worked just fine. (snowshoes went for a ride today.) gulfside to the summit, a combo of bare rock and granular snow...spike conditions. leaving washington on CP, could've put snowshoes on for a bit, but i didn't. no one else did either, most were in full crampons. winds picked up on the way down to the hut, but nothing like what was forecast. Monroe was the windiest and socked in, but i had the summit to myself. rather than completely retrace my route, i opted for Westside still in spikes. there were a couple of 'no fall zones' that made me hold my breath, but the spikes held. once i reached the cog, i opted to descend beside the rails and pulled out the crampons. the 'trail' next to the tracks turned into an ice luge pretty much down to 4000'. i hope everyone else i saw out today, had as much fun as i did. :) |
