Started out in spikes, one small group ahead of me. First 2 miles were mostly fresh 4" of snow with some bare spots but the base was solid overall. After the Wilderness boundary the trail steepens so I switched to snowshoes. Great grip on the steep middle section because the snow packed nicely underfoot. There is ice underneath the snow in many spots. Higher up it was a drier powder but grip was still good. The trail to Middle Tripyramid was powdery but not tedious except for the last steep pitch. Headed back to North Tripyramid and switched to crampons for the trip down Pine Bend Brook trail. The middle section coming down the Foolkiller is VERY steep on the descent. I'm not a butt-slider & crampons got me down quickly. Micro-spikes would not have enough grip and even technical snowshoes might slide going down the very steep parts. Stayed in crampons until the first brook crossing then put micro-spikes on the rest of the way. No postholing and there were about a dozen hikers today so the trail should remain well-packed this week. Total time 4:25 up & down despite soft snow in the upper parts. |
