Comments
Comments: I've sure conditions have changed with the 3/2 weather, but for what it's worth - I went up Ammonsoosuc Ravine Trail to the hut - trail was hard packed with ice, but there was a light dusting of snow and only small patches of hard, clear flow ice. I wore microspikes up but could have switched to my Hillsound crampons and been a little more comfy. Once at the hut, I cautiously made my way over to Monroe (couldn't see very far with clouds/fog) for an up and down and back to the hut. I wasn't sure of trail conditions over to Washington so I switched to my Hillsound crampons (would have been ok with microspikes though). Clouds/fog kept visibility to about two cairns ahead on my way to Washington, but the winds were light and the trail conditions good. I had snowshoes just in case, but never needed them (foiled again!). The clouds finally lifted just as I neared the summit of Washington. I knew I was close, but couldn't see the summit with the persistent fog/clouds, but all of a sudden a porthole of blue sky opened to reveal the summit and buildings. I went down Jewell Trail instead of retracing my steps. I originally planned to go back down Ammonoosuc and had an ice-axe, but opted for a quicker jaunt down Jewell. Microspikes were fine going down and I didn't post-hole, although the snow was softer. A solo hike for me, but I ran into some other solos, pairs, and small groups here and there, which made it an enjoyable and peaceful day.
