Comments
Comments: Temps in low 40's, started out at 11. I put snowshoes on at the start. Sawyer River Road well-packed but getting soft in late-morning sun. Reached Signal Ridge trail with 2" of new snow on the ground. One other hiker in boots went in only about .4 miles then I broke the rest of the trail. Snow about 3" deep up to brook crossings which were easy. After that the trail got steeper and snow got very sticky on the switchbacks. After the 4th switchback turns right the sidehill traverse of 1.2 miles seems endless! The snow was loading up on my snowshoes but it was a little too deep for micro-spikes. The trail narrows in many spots. Finally reached the next set of switchbacks and got to top of Signal Ridge in another mile with the fire tower in the distance. The snow in the saddle was really soft and I switched to crampons when the trail got rough after re-entering the woods for the last pitch. That gave me the grip I needed to reach the summit at 2:05. Clear with views in all directions but fire tower was boarded up. Came back down very fast in crampons and put snowshoes back on right after brook crossings. Got back to car at 4:55. If temps are still in the 40's I would recommend snowshoes up to the brook crossings at least; more snow fell on Friday 3/2.
