Comments
Comments: Fancypants needed the Tris in winter, and this time, on the drive down, we rather spontaneously opted for the longer South Slide - Scaur route from Livermore Trailhead over Pine Bend Brook.

No one had been up South Slide since the last snowfall. We used Hillsound spikes and then snowshoes on the lower approach (a delightful walk through gorgeous hardwoods), then Hillsounds on the Slide. Some may prefer crampons - and they would not have been overkill - and an ice axe, but we felt pretty okay with just spikes and poles. The newer snow was sticky (and got waaay stickier in the sun and record warm temps!), and it seemed to be bonded enough to the ice underneath such that footing was pretty good. Still, this is a steep slide, and there are a few spots where you could go for a bit of a ride. The upper half of the Slide had a lot more bare rock and gravel. Views were awesome!

No one had been between South and Middle Tri recently either, so even though I’ve done this section approximately 400 times... I lost the trail in the no-blazes-open-woods section. Hahaha! We had to bushwhack for only about 5 minutes though. Lots of moose activity between South and Middle but none anywhere else today.

The snow got stickier, and there were multiple spike-snowshoe-bareboot changes. We buttslid down some of the steeps coming off North. As temps climbed, FP stripped down down to a Hawaiian shirt and his “Tetris” tights, a sight to behold. Then we met two guys, only other hikers of the day who had come up PBB.

Scaur Ridge Trail was a joy to descend, (mostly a very gradual, gentle old road through very open hardwoods) and the views of North Slide are awesome in winter! We saw a no-longer-hibernating chipmunk on the way down (on February 28!!!). Livermore Trail was lovely although we eventually longed for either skis or fat bikes for the slog out.

Thanks FP for another fun day in the woods. We earned these peaks today! :)
