Valley Way consists of a hard-packed base, choppy and unconsolidated in places with a few nice icy areas that require consideration. Most ice bulges can be avoided by tree-hugging if you need to. I switched back-n-forth between my light traction rock spikes and brand new hillsounds trail crampons (throughout the day) but K-10's would have been best on Valley Way in the a.m. Adams was first up and the icy rocks slowed me down and made for a good challenge. Madison was very easy comparatively and could have been done without traction. The winds were not even noticeable, bare hands up and down Madison - didn't seem like winter. Quick conditions coming down Valley Way after the icy spots had softened up. Very few deep postholes on these trails - a rarity! What a way to end February! Congrats to Michelle - she finished her Winter 48 on Washington today! Yayz!! And thanks to Billy for the company today. |
