Snowshoed entire trip (had crampons, but didn't need them in the direction we went). Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail was broken out and generally packed powder with some ice lurking underneath. Hut already burried up to roof in snow. Crawford Path from hut to Washington has the normal tricky sideslope, as well as another one climbing Washington proper. To avoid it (and using crampons, as there were patchy underlying ice fields), we took snowfields in places to get up and down. Many of the cairns and rocks are covered in an inch or more of solid blue ice - may make identifying them tricky moving forward. Cornice has not yet formed on northern Monroe Loop. Limited use between Monroe and Pierce. Broke out Eisenhower Loop (south) and first part of Crawford Path before meeting older tracks halfway to Pierce. Some very deep snow drifts. Crawford Path from Pierce down was an excellent snowshoe. Overall, decent snow and ice coverage in these areas above treeline prior to forecasted snowstorm, resulting in good snowshoeing with adequate snowshoe traction. |
