Comments
Comments: Started at John Rand Cabin. All trails packed and hard and icey monorail. Most people would want light traction. I was fine bare booting until open summit area. But don't get off the monorail. Snow still deep - maybe 4-6' deep above 2500'? A couple weeks ago some idiot postholed up the Gorge Brook Trail to a point about 15-20 minutes from the summit. He went in waist deep at least 400 times and left countless knee deep postholes in the trail going up and down. The trail is not as fun to hike because of these dangerous, deep, knee-shattering holes on both sides of and in the middle of the monorail. Perhaps snow shoes would mitigate the fear of stepping into one of these bottomless postholes. Last 150' to summit was a pleasure without the postholes to think about. Entire open summit above scrub is bare rocks and ice. The snow in the scrub along the south ridge is deep. Trail is packed and easy to follow. We descended via Carriage Rd and Snapper, both of which are packed hard and icey. Thankfully, no postholes worth mentioning.
