| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Plenty of parking at the trailhead, but the parking area is not plowed. Two-wheel-drive sedans may have trouble. |
|
| Surface Conditions: |
Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow - Unpacked Powder, Snow - Drifts, Snow - Wet/Sticky |
|
| Recommended Equipment: |
Snowshoes |
|
| Water Crossing Notes: |
The three brook crossings below the junction with Bald Peak spur are all snow-bridged. |
|
| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Six blowdowns, four of them above the junction with the Bald Peak spur. Two have mini-herd paths, three are duck-unders and one is a step-over. One of the duck-unders requires a real limbo. |
|
| Dog-Related Notes: |
Most of the water on this usually water-abundant route is now frozen. Also, the heavy, wet snow on the route right now may cause snow-balling problems in the paws of long-haired dogs. (Polly had trouble despite three applications of Musher's Wax.) |

| Comments: |
The Annual Christmas Eve hike, which I've been doing since I was a kid growing up in California's Coast Range. Snow depth ranged from a foot or so at the trailhead to two feet and more on the ridge, and it's fairly heavy snow right now. We were beneath overcast until we got right to the summit of North Kinsman, when suddenly the sky cleared and we were treated to stunning, sunny views of Franconia Ridge and dozens of the southern peaks. The temperature was 10 above at the summit with some wind, so we didn't stay too long, but the views today were unforgettable. Whoever broke out the Mt. Kinsman trail in the past couple of days -- thank you! You made today's ascent possible. |
