Rick and I were breaking trail all the way up Carter Dome on the 19-mile, Zeta Pass, and Carter Dome trails. Once above Zeta Pass, it was quite tough going with lots of drifts and an uncomfortable traverse with the left side uphill continuously for a mile. Great views from Carter Dome with the 3-4 feet of snow assisting in being higher than the short trees. It was faster going breaking trail downhill to Carter Notch hut, but I can still hardly imagine going up such a steep trail in those conditions. 19-mile brook trail is now solidly broken out, and the Wildcat trail was not too bad but also steep. |
