Near-perfect, fast-moving conditions throughout. Some of the best we've seen in quite some time.
The Gale River Trail has frozen solidly, and light traction allowed us to walk with ease. Unfortunately, the middle section of the trail has some areas of gnarly postholes, so coming down the trail in the flat light of afternoon, we had to be careful. Other than that, it was an easy walk -- even the sections that melted out from the recent thaw have filled in and re-frozen nicely.
Garfield Ridge Trail was more of the same, but with an inch or two of fresh powder.
Twinway is chopped here and there, but no need for snowshoes -- light traction was fine, although traction on some slick steep sections helped going down for one of us.
We were able to summit South Twin while the skies were clear and blue, with barely a breeze up top. By the time we left the hut after a lunch break, the summits were clouding up and skies were completely overcast when we reached Beaver Brook. |
