Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks Mt. Liberty, Mt. Flume, NH
Trails
Trails: Whitehouse Trail, Liberty Springs Trail, Franconia Ridge Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, December 18, 2010
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Plowed but not sanded. I had studded snows but I don't think the others did, so it must be okay for all vehicles.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Ice - Blue
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Rock hops or ice bridge on largest. It looked a bit iffy but worked fine.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Some minor blowdown between Liberty and Flume. Wet spots down low on Liberty Springs which aren't a problem unless you want to keep your dogs paws dry. Trail was just some new powder over some semi consolidated snow, although between Liberty and Flume it had either been awhile since someone had hiked it, or there had been 4-6" inch new powder near the peaks.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: The mighty tough little dog had fun but he had some ice/snow balls on his paws and lower legs. I put on Excel paw treatment but it wasn't soft enough to cover like musher's wax.

Comments
Comments: Passed two on the way up, and met two on the way down. I thought there would be many more but the solitude and open spaces were a nice contrast to sitting with 113,000+ people the weekend prior watching a hockey game or being crammed into full planes. Peaks were in the clouds when we were on them once again. Little wind with mildish temps in afternoon. I carried snowshoes, but bare boots worked. I mostly used microspikes which helped in a few places on Liberty Springs' ice, and on the boulders coming off Liberty towards Flume, but otherwise weren't helpful or hurtful. It was so nice to be back on the trails with Pepper.
