Comments
Comments: Phenomenal views, low winds and a fun group today. That's all the positive stuff first. Yesterday it was 50 degrees and rainy in Twin Mountain followed by 3 inches of snow and subzero temps; the trail is very firm. The road walk was choppy and so was the lower section of the trail. After the bushwhack to bypass both water crossings is where the depth of snow increases - the depth of postholes are more apparent and absurd. We carried snowshoes and would have like to smooth out the trail but I felt safer dodging the holes especially since one can stay on the firm tread way in between these deep cavities with care. I measured some of these postholes up to 2 feet deep with water at the base. That definitely added time but did not diminish. About a half mile from the junction the postholes stop where it appears those who repeatedly fell through turned back. It is in this area that we needed traction and kept it on the rest of the way. What is left of the monorail is very narrow. Great day out with Denise, Al and Michelle.
