The first half of the Mt. Rowe Trail (Blue Trail) up to the upper split with the Benjamin Weeks Trail was well-packed and easily done in just boots. The rest of the way up the Mt. Rowe Trail to the summit was easily 6-12" deep the whole way, with some spots easily over a foot deep, and had only been traversed by one lonely set of bootprints before me. Therefore the upper switchbacks and final pitch all the way to the ridge and summit were loose and tough for this idiot that decided to leave his snowshoes in the car after seeing how packed the bottom of the trail was. I would definitely recommend snowshoes for breaking out and packing down the top half of the trail all the way to the ridge and summit of Rowe. |
