Loop hike up Piper Trail, summited Chocorua and descended via Liberty and Hammond Trails. No snow and ice until the last mile or so before the summit on Piper. We used microspikes almost as soon as we came onto the open ledges on Piper and kept them on to summit and down the very icy Liberty trail and for at least 1.5 miles when we connected with the Hammond Trail. Minimal snow. After that lots of leaves covering roots and rocks. It was a fantastic hike, the ice made it challenging, can def see wearing crampons in full winter for both trails. Stopped at the Jim Liberty Cabin and talked w/ some other hikers. Overall, trails are in great shape after the late October storm. Parking lots were a few miles apart. Piper trailhead lot is very big with an outhouse, Hammond th smaller. |
