The trail to/from South Hancock has very thick, wavy ice on 80% of it. I used crampons for the descent and had no trouble. Some of the group kept their microspikes on. We all made it down safely but with microspikes there was a lot of treee hugging and butt sliding. I would strongly recommend crampons for this section. Micro spikes were used from the beginning of the day and worked well for the rest of the trails. It might have been a little easier to go up to South Peak on the ice, but who knew?? |
