Comments
Comments: initial mile or so of mt. garfield trail was virtually snow and ice free. then a dusting of snow with icy patches gradually increasing in depth to a couple inches packed once you enter the switchbacks. there was some really nice snow coverage through the upper portion of the hike with only a few small ice patches. was expecting ice on the short steep pitch to the summit, but it was all nicely covered in snow. a bit of rime and ice around the summit area. water crossings were all low, but watch out for icy rocks. once blowdown maybe .5 or so past the last water crossing. nice work by rickb and crew removing a couple others. gale river rd. open and in decent shape. some of the snow cover on the road melted over the course of the day leaving bare dirt in sections though other areas may end up icy. the big 90 degree turn was starting to look a bit icy underneath the melting snow layer. used light traction (microspikes) once i hit the switchbacks. nice quiet day on garfield minus the wind that was whipping around pretty well. summit was shrouded in fog and clouds, but the woods in the upper part of garfield trail were beautifully snow laden. nicest snow coverage i've seen yet this fall. great to be out.
