A fine day of joining Danielle in her trail bagging pursuit--my favorite kind of day with plenty of just one more thing! Bonus a NHH100 for Danielle too, Scaur Peak. After spotting a car at Snows Mt we started up Livermore Rd. A quick out and back to the Big Pines was fun and then we went up Irene's Path that now replaces Kettle & Flume Brook trail. Short spur up to The Scaur and enjoyed fine views of WV and beyond to Jennings Peak and Sandwich. Water was roaring down the Flume! Up Old Skidder to Livermore Trail and it was wet in places due to water not making the ditches anymore. Up the Scaur Ridge and lots of little streams crossing the trail. We went a short distance north on Pine Bend Brook and then turned west to bushwhack to Scuar Peak--thru mostly open woods followed on occasion a herd path to the recognized summit (jar is missing sign still there). We retraced our foot steps back to Pine Bend Brook Trail and hiked a 100 feet past trail intersection and then followed herd path to the north to a big open area with the best vista north, Carrigain, Captain and even snowy white Mt Washington super duper. Back on the Livermore Trail we decided to try to hike Norway Rapids, when we got to the brook there was no way anything could cross the roaring high water so we whacked back to the Livermore Rd and went back up to the Cascade Nordic Trail and at the second bridge we went down the east side of the Cascade Path out and back (we couldn't cross the brook here either). We went down the West side of the Cascade Path, better views of the cascades are on the east side. we went down and when we intersected the Norway Rapids Trail we went out and back to the brook to get this. We then followed the Cascades Path back to our spotted car. This was 14 miles of new trails for Danielle and I love the Waterville trails-- http://wvaia.org Sorry to see that the 30th edition trail maps no longer have a blown up of the WV trails. |
