Wednesday a man died on the trail I went up, if I had gone down the same way I would have arrived just a few minutes later. But while I have been up Fishin Jimmy Trail three times before including once in winter, it seemed particularly bad Wednesday. One of the blocks bolted to the rock had come off and was in the woods at the bottom, while it was possible to get by it didn't lend much confidence to the rest of the blocks of which there were many often in worse places. While I made it up I decided to go down a longer and easier way and bushwhacked from the col to Kinsman Pond Trail then out to the Basin and back the bike path. A young couple I had met on S Kinsman caught up with me just before the Cascade Brook Trail jct having presumably gone around by the trail but they chose to turn L at the junction to go back to the campground via Lonesome Lake. Earlier, a man with a dog had asked me what it was like to do the longer route towards Cannon and down the Lonesome Lake Trail instead of going back down Fishin Jimmy Trail.

Fishin Jimmy Trail is not as difficult as Huntington Ravine Trail but as part of the Appalachian Trail it needs to be kept in better repair. Missing steps should be replaced promptly and the remainder checked when one comes off. Many of the most difficult sections were built in the macho trail-building era of the '70s and could easily be bypassed.

I am sorry about the man and my deepest sympathies to his wife.
