Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks Mt. Wolf, NH
Trails
Trails: Reel Brook Road, Reel Brook Trail, Kinsman Ridge Trail, herd path
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, September 30, 2017
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: I parked at the small parking area 0.4 mi. down Reel Brook Road. Low clearance cars should park here and walk the 0.2 mi. to the trailhead. High clearance needed to reach the parking area at the trailhead, due to large rocks in the road.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable, Mud - Significant
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Several on this route, all are easily crossed.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: RBT in great shape overall, thanks to JCarter! One large blowdown just after the power line clearing, but it looks like it's been there for a while. KRT is brushy in spots, but no blowdowns. I paused in one area where the trail crosses Reel Brook very briefly to bypass a washed out area. It wasn't immediately clear here where the trail went. It crosses over, runs on the opposite bank for several yards, then jumps back across again.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Saw one at the trailhead, who was barky. Water down low for pups, but nothing on the ridge.
Bugs
Bugs: Nope, too cold.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Nothing.

Comments
Comments: A return to Wolf while also doing some redlining.

Both trails were dry overall. A couple of light showers passed through on the ascent, but weren't enough to make the trail wet. RBT is a very easy and pleasant walk. Grades and footing are excellent aside from one moderate and rocky stretch climbing the ridge. KRT is rolling and rocky, with many ups and downs and short scrambles. The large mud pits approaching Wolf were drying up, but you still don't want to sink down in them. Most had very well beaten bypasses. The outlook near the summit of Wolf continues to grow in. The herd path to the true summit of Wolf is very apparent once on it, but could be missed from the trail. It's about 0.2 mi. south of the outlook spur. The recognized highpoint is only a couple hundred feet from the trail. Use care when rehanging the jar, as it's attached kinda funky.
