Comments
Comments: snow covered trail from the start. a packed down crusty, sometimes icy base on gale river with deeper powder on top as you go along. same to hut on ridge. twinway had a couple inches of fresh powder with some sections of thick ice in the lower steep section. north twin spur had a couple inches of fresh powder with once icy scramble below the summit which was a bit tricky to descend. frost trail had a couple inches of fresh snow with a bit of ice on one of the steep pitches. crossings of gale river were not a problem. stepping stones were snow covered today which made the hops across relatively easy. will be harder if they ice up. one big blowdown on gale river trail a bit past the bluff overlooking the river. would be passable in limbed up. right now its a walk around. one other step/climb over on twinway shortly after leaving the hut.
light traction worked well. i tried using hillsound trail crampons which worked great on the ice, but were a hair aggressive in rocky areas with light snow cover. was wishing i had my beat up microspikes for much of the hike.
was hoping for clearing skies, but i wasn't to be in this section of the mountains today. a few more feet of snow on the ground and i could have been tricked into believing it was february. really beautiful up high despite the lack of views. it was nice meeting mike and having some company heading up twin. great to see jeb on the trail again and meeting karen and dave. nice day to be out.
