Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks The Bulge, Mt. Cabot, NH
Trails
Trails: Unknown Pond Trail, Kilkenny Ridge Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, November 28, 2010
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Mill Brook Rd. unsanded packed snow with slopes. I had studded snows on a borrowed Impreza AWD and that turned out okay, but anything less would be too risky for my tastes.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Unpacked Powder, Snow - Trace/Minimal Depth
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Step over
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Unknown Pond from Mill Brook not well painted but easy to follow foot path up to evergreen tunnel. Might be iffy in winter. A couple of soft/muddy/wet spots. One major blowdown on the Kilkenny but easy enough to get over just off the trail. Maybe an inch of snow on Unknown Pond; on upper Kilkenny a couple of inches.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: The mighty tough little dog had a pretty easy hike in finishing his Fall 4Ks. A little icing on the paws but no problem. We saw one other very nice dog that had camped overnight.

Comments
Comments: One brief moment of sun; otherwise overcast with summits in and out of clouds, and somewhat cold with a bit of a wind. We skipped going to the Horn for that reason. Met two guys and their dog who had camped overnight and they said it had been very cold and windy. They came up from York Pond Rd. After doing Passaconaway via Dicey's Mill yesterday and meeting up with a fair number of hikers & dogs, including some favorites, on a surprisingly nice enough day, today seemed almost wild with dark weather, the iffy access road and no signs of other hikers beside the campers. We didn't get to do the hike we wanted this weekend, but Pepper finishing his Fall 4Ks was satisfying to me. Pepper just had fun on the trails and loved his jerky lunch. Well done, you little mutt.
