Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Many, up until you pass into the Sandwich Wilderness. Many of these are tiny tributaries, the others are easy rock hops. Many dry beds as well; maybe they have water after winter or huge rains, not sure.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Trail head sign is visible from the road. Some areas need a little brushing. There are some nice steps descending to some of the streams. Many blowdowns; none were a problem. There is a walk-under which was probably a simple step-over midwinter. One muddy area has bog bridges which are starting to go. You can still see some of the yellow blazes in the wilderness area. Thank you, maintainers.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Plenty of water for your drinking and swimming pleasure; make sure your humans have some for the upper trail. Steep sections may unnerve some dogs on the descent. Kudos to the folks encouraging and helping their Bernese (I think) down some of those.
Bugs
Bugs: Some skeets, some blackflies. Bring your repellent.

Comments
Comments: Contour lines do not tell the whole story. This did look good on paper, but turned out to be more difficult than I had expected. Many of the boulders and rocks were damp and mossy. Took me forever to get to North Tripyramid. Too damn tired to go for Middle (and to think that I was actually considering making a loop with Sabbaday Falls earlier in the day!). This hike broke the record for number of times I heard or said the Magic Word. Even totally fit people half my age were saying it, wondering where the top of the #$% mtn was. I guess it was just that kind of day. Several people descending were taking the Scaur back so as not to deal with the South Slide after they heard they only needed Middle and North for the list.

But this was a beautiful trail. Charles Dickens could have been the trail builder, because "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times." The first two miles are a gradual, gentle woods walk; then it went from zero to 60 in less than a minute. Then midway there was a flat section with a soft footbed. Prema saw a moose here. Then back to the steeps again. Final push and there you are! If I had more energy and did not have a drive home and work the next day I may have tried the loop. We finished early enough to have pizza in Lincoln and late enough to miss the NASCAR traffic.
