Valley Way was the preferred trail up to the hut as the day was a wet and overcast experience. With the coverage of Valley Way, we were able to stay dry up until we reached the hut. At the hut, we unloaded some weight and geared up in our rain gear for the 0.5 summit. As soon as we were above the tree line, the aggressive wind and rain made for a challenging ascent. As we continued, the higher the cairns, the more we saw ice and slush buildup on their sides. By the summit, they were mostly covered in ice. While that was true of the cairns, the rocks were only wet. |
