Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Trail maintenance was good on trails. There were no blow downs across the trails. The wood ladders on the Willey Range trail on the south side of Mt Willey remain in good condition. There are a few sections of the Willey Range trail on the southern approach to Mt Willey that are eroded. There were some improvised side loops to avoid the worst of the eroded spots.

Comments
Comments: The Willey Range trail up the south side of Mt Willey is steep and rough so be prepared. There has been much trail work over the years to curtail erosion and improve the hiking experience. However, the terrain is challenging and additional trail work is required to preserve the trail. The Ethan Pond trail is in good condition helped by the logs placed across the trail in the initial steep section of the trail. There was considerable sections of trail with mud, standing water, or running water. There were sufficient rocks and roots in most of the muddy/wet areas to facilitate passage with minimal wetness to the boots.
There were lots of hikers out today. Good to chat with Bill F, Franco, Mike L, and Monkeys Uncle. There was also a young boy who climbed his first 4K today (Mt Tom). I saw a red fox on the Ethan Pond trail while descending. I lucked out as the rain began just after I turned on to route 302 for the ride home.
