Comments: We started out pretty late in the day from Pinkham Notch Parking lot. Temps were in the low 30s but with windchill, it felt a lot colder in the parking lot and we worried that it would be unbearable at higher temps, but as soon as we started the uphill on Boott Spur trail, long sleeve and a vest and hat kept me warm enough. The ascent from Tuckerman Ravine to intersection with Boott Spur Link was pretty steep and required significant rock scrambling. There was some mud, but nothing too slippery. Snow appeared on the trail a bit before we hit alpine zone, and micro spikes were a big help. Crampons would have been overkill. There are two overlooks along the trail, and when/if the fog lifts, the views from them are breathtaking. Beyond the treeline, trail was clearly marked with tall cairns, though a big snow storm will likely obscure them in the near future. My three friends and I were in decent shape but moving rather slowly. It took us 3 hours to reach the start of Boott Spur Link. At this elevation temperature dropped significantly and as we descended down the link trail to Hermit Lake Hut, the wind was pretty strong. Rocks were lightly covered in snow and microspikes proved very helpful. We had lunch by the Hut, and went up Tuckerman Ravine to the bottom of the ravine for the gorgeous views. After numerous photos, we turned around and took Tuckerman Ravine carriage road back to the parking lot. After the snow levels diminished, the trail became wet & very slippery; difficult to navigate in the dark, even with headlamps.

All in all this 6 mile loop was moderately challenging for us; temps were in high 20s, and we only encountered high winds descending on the Link trail. Started hike at 11am, finished by 6pm. Gorgeous views all around once the fog lifts.
