We left at 5:30 am -- trails were still firm and packed down well from all the Sunday foot traffic. Microspiked it up with no problems. Wore snowshoes for the descent since we knew it would be around 40 degrees in the valley before we returned...figured the snow would get soft and we'd have sinking issues before we finished our hike. So, for us, it was 'spikes up and 'shoes down. Keep in mind we began our hike before dawn. Now's the time of year for warmer temps (hopefully), so with all the snow out there now, if your goal is a quick 'spike up a packed trail, then make sure you leave well before dawn while the trails are still cold and firm, and bring the snowshoes for the descent, when the snow will likely have begun to soften.
Neither Hale Brook Trail nor Lend-A-Hand have been broken out after this past storm.
We saw one fellow heading up as we were heading out. Other than that, we had the trails to ourselves.
This area is supposed to have 4-7 inches of new sleet and/or snow on it tomorrow/Wed, so this trail conditions report might not do anyone any good...conditions will quickly change.
Congrats to Alex for finishing her Hale Grid. She's about 2/3 finished the entire Grid now, I think. She'll have a trip report up by Thursday morning. |
