Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Not bad conditions for experienced dogs. The snow was soft and filled in nicely between the rocks. She had some postholing near the top of Jewell when we strayed off of the trail. There were a few icy sections to traverse but she handled them better than me. Just above LOC hut we went up and around the firm snowfield to play it safe. About 2/3 of the way up Monroe there was a large drift just below the ridge crest. Marlie made it up but I couldn't with microspikes. As I made my way around she came back down and followed me up in another spot showing off her climbing skills. She never fails to amaze me.

Comments
Comments: I had originally planned to just hike only Jefferson but the weather was too good to pass up an extended visit above treeline. Sunshine, less than 20 mph wind and temps in the low 30s!

Snowshoes worked best below treeline and up to the Gulfside Tr. The exposed section of Jewell was drifted over and a little tricky to follow. After that microspikes worked well although crampons would have been a better choice. There was lots of exposed rock but also several large icy patches heading down Clay to Sphinx Col, around the top of Great Gulf, above LOC hut, and heading up Monroe that were more than the microspikes should be used for. At the hut the snowshoes went back on for the walk down and out. What an excellent day. So glad I decided to extend my hike and I have the sunburn to prove it.
