Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: I was only car at Ferncroft when I arrived (8:45). lot is nicely plowed, room for a number of cars.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow - Unpacked Powder
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Only real water crossing is at 2.3 miles when you cross E branch of Wonalancet River. Much of river covered with thick snow but I doubt if it could support anyone. I crossed on the large tree that has fallen across and spans the River - no problem even with snowshoes on.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Trail in excellent shape with exception of one large blowdown, about 1 - 3/4 miles in. Much of that blowdown is now cut up and off the trail, but you still have a 20 inch main truck to step over. One person wearing snowshoes had hiked the trail before me, probably on Thursday. Whoever that is, thank you, the tracks allowed me to keep on the trail and did much toward breaking out the trail. Strong recommendation for snowshoes if you are attempting this trail over the weekend.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: With the trail now broken out dogs should have fun and easy traveling.
Bugs
Bugs:
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: nothing on the trail

Comments
Comments: This is my second year of winter hiking and today is the most beautiful day I have experienced. The snow was new, pure white, the views through the forest were like photographs and the sky could not have been clearer or bluer. One person had already broken the trail but it felt nice to contribute to packing it down. There was a solid two plus feet of snow once you got beyond the Tom Wiggin Trail. There was probably a foot between the start of the trail and Tom Wiggin. I sank in 4 inches if I stepped off the trail on the way up, but on the way down there were steps when I went down at least 12 inches (occasionally more), even though the trail had been twice packed. Given the consistency of the snow, not packed and not powder, traveling down the trail was fun and fairly fast. Sorry I can't report on the last 3/4th of a mile to the summit, I turned around at that point. I realize that is close to the summit but I remembered how steep the last section to the summit is and didn't feel comfortable pushing myself. Surprisingly I met no other hikers today.
