Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Carrigain brook was almost not passable. At the split right before the brook, staying left is not possible without at least 6 inches of submersion. Staying to the right at the split (the official trail) we managed to cross by way of about 5 icy rocks and 2 slightly underwater rocks. With proper gear, we weren't at risk of getting wet, but with the water level rising this may not be passable at all soon. FYI we didn't have to wack up or down the trail to find a better crossing, but maybe there is one?

Comments
Comments: Arrived at the lot just before 7AM to find it empty. Although very cold, we expected to see at least a few groups on the mountain, but we didn't see another soul until we crossed Carrigain Brook on the way down. Trail is a firm monorail all the way. Micros recommended, although one could get away with yak-tracks...no ice! Crust was hard enough that we could walk off the monorail and not fall through, although it was below 0 degrees F most of the hike. There also was a thin layer of powder, probably from the small snow squalls that hit overnight/on our way up. Perfect conditions to move quickly, as we traveled closer to our summer pace than our normal winter one. Summit and Signal Ridge were in the clouds until right when we hit Signal Ridge on the way up. NOAA forecast couldn't have been more accurate with regards to cloud cover. We brought everything but the kitchen sink to deal with the cold and wind, but the winds felt more mild than the 30-40 mph gusts that were in the summit forecast.

Again, Carrigain Brook could be an issue going forward. I am interested to hear if anyone else attempts over the next couple weeks. I was hoping for an Owl's Head trip before the Winter ends, but according to this weekend's trail reports that doesn't sound too promising.
