Peaks East Osceola, Mt. Osceola, NH
Trails
Trails: Greeley Ponds Trail, Mt. Osceola Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Monday, February 27, 2017
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Tiny parking area, if you get there and there are no spots there is a small turn off just downhill, at the cross country ski trail access, you can park there and walk the road up to the trailhead. Only one car was parked horribly today, I consider that a win for this lot!
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow - Wet/Sticky
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction, Snowshoes
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: There is a snow bridge, but I am unsure how much longer it will hold up. If it crumbles you can use a few narrow downed branches or rock hop if the water levels are low.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Couple of downed small trees you can go under or over between peaks. There is one blowdown between the chimney and Osceola (through a flat section) where you bang a left at the blowdown and the trail corridor then angles up. It's a non issue right now, but after the next snowstorm keep an eye out for it as you could easily head strait past it off trail into semi open woods.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Saw a Golden Retriever who was very happy to be hiking :)

Comments
Comments: Very nice morning on the Osceola's. We wore light traction from car to car as the semi-cold temps made for a very firm surface with no issues. Some hikers were wearing crampons up the steeps which is not a bad idea either, but we were fine with light traction on the way up while using caution on the way down through a couple of sticky/slippery snow sections, use whatever makes you feel the most comfortable. Our snowshoes stayed on our packs, we may/would have needed them if the temps were a little warmer or if we were out there in the afternoon. fyi, the Chimney has two bypasses, while the chimney itself has an ice bulge in the middle with a few feet of snow below and above it.
