Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Ferncoft is icy/muddy but open for many cars.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Ice - Blue, Ice - Breakable Crust, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Snow/Ice - Monorail (Stable), Snow - Wet/Sticky, Snow/Ice - Postholes, Slush
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Light Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: The current crossings are all easy, but there is water on both Blueberry Ledge and Dicey's Mill at lower elevations and these will most likely get worse with predicted warm weather. Major crossing on Dicey's Mill is easy even with high water as there are 3 or 4 trees across the stream.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Lots of blowdowns, leaners, duck unders, and due to snowpack (especially on Rollins) branches in your face and eyes.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Not sure if the monorail and soft snow on side would be a problem, but saw no dogs today.

Comments
Comments: Carried snowshoes expecting to put them on soon after starting due to all the trip reports on soft snow/postholing. Wore the spikes (Hillsounds) for the icy road walk. On the trail we were surprised to see frozen conditions and stayed in light traction the entire day. I had spikes and the Hillsounds might have been better. Blueberry Ledge had a stable if very uneven monorail, and lots of postholes just off the sides of it. Snow ramp and minimal ice made the ledges the easiest we have ascended. Once on Rollins the "fun" began! Someone had post holed the entire length in the warm weather and the monorail was trashed for much of it. It was very slow going as you had to watch every step which then allowed the branches (high snow pack) to attack. Not much fun (and based on the depth of the PH, that person did not have much fun either). Dicey's Mill was in much better shape (similar to BL) in that it was a stable, bumpy monorail so the ascent to Passaconway and the hike out were better. Low on DM the snow is soft and very easy to step off of the monorail up to your knee. The monorail was too bumpy/post holed and frozen to use snowshoes. Still, as always a great day out with Karen.
