Comments
Comments: warm temps to start (35 at 8:30am) warmed up the snow to wet granular. i wore snowshoes all the way up to the junction with Chemin des Dames and then switched to crampons for the ice/hard snow. trail is pretty bony in spots from here to the base of summit cone, though it looked like someone had summited in snowshoes earlier in the day.(?) airline had some deep post-holes. (how can that be fun?) from the tracks, it looks like i was the only one to wear shoes today. one fellow had them strapped to his pack and another fellow skinned up on skis (bless his heart). i put the shoes back on for the descent and with the increasing temps and sun (42) the snow was wetter and heavier. i kept banging my poles together to clear the baskets.
overall good day. VERY warm! i hiked in just my base layer and only needed to put on a jacket for the summit. winds 15-20mph (estimate)
