19 Mile Brook broken out and pretty well packed. Three groups and a solo hiker, total of 10 adults, broke out Carter Dome Trail from 19 Mile to Zeta Pass, and seven continued on the Carter Dome Trail until its junction with the Black Angel Trail, .4 from the Carter Dome summit. Only four continued to Carter Dome and down to the hut for the night. Rough day, breaking out 1.5-2 feet (3-4' drifts) of snow from the past few days. Carter/Moriah Trail heading north from Zeta Pass not broken out at all, so it wasn't in the cards for us (wanted Middle/South Carter). Tried for Carter Dome, but very slow trail breaking along the ridge and had to turn back .4 before the summit to get down before dark. Hopefully the group of four made it to Carter Notch. Snowshoes a must. Trail breaking is tough, but worthwhile for the hiking community. Do your part if you can. |
