Comments
Comments: The initial slope through the hardwood forest was free of snow with no obstructions. There were some stretches of mud which were slippery especially on descent. The evergreen traverse had trace of snow at first. After the spring (water flowing), the snow was about a quarter to a half inch compressed by foot traffic. Some ice in places. Able to ascends without traction. On descent from Starr King used micro spikes as an insurance against slippage. About a half inch of compressed snow or ice on ridge trail between Starr King and Waumbek. Several blow downs with only one that presented much difficulty (will need chain saw or ax to remove). Recommend walking about fifty yards east on the Kilkenny Trail from the summit of Waumbek to reach an excellent view point of the Presidential Range. From Madison to Eisenhower the snowy peaks were impressive with the gray sky backdrop. Gray Jays in this area. Saw many other hikers including a group from Meredith with three members who were completing their 48 NH 4000s at Waumbek. No wind! Got down before any rain arrived.
