| Hiking Trail Conditions Report | | | Peaks | Galehead Mountain, NH | | | | | Trails: | Beaver Brook XC ski trail, Gale River Road, Gale River Trail, Garfield Ridge Trail, Frost Trail | | |
|
| | Date of Hike: | Sunday, January 22, 2017 | | | | | Parking/Access Road Notes: | not many cars today--most at Garfield, 3 at Trudeau and 3 at the X country ski trail area | | | | | Surface Conditions: | Wet Trail, Standing/Running Water on Trail, Snow - Wet/Sticky, Snow/Ice - Postholes, Snow/Ice - Small Patches | | | | | Recommended Equipment: | Snowshoes, Light Traction | | | | | Water Crossing Notes: | the one larger crossing on Gale River trail was stable in the morning but cracked in places on my return | | | | | Trail Maintenance Notes: | as I ascended, I noticed what appeared fresh cut tree branches that had blocked the trails and had now been removed to the side of the trail; at the trail juncture with the AT, I bumped into 5 hikers (three backpackers, 2 others) and would find out soon thereafter that one of them was the mysterious trail maintainer.
As I was using my saw to cut back the branches blocking the AT, Randall and David arrived and it turns out David was carrying a large saw (compared to my 'girly saw')--he finished the job I had started--thank you, David! No more step over/duck under on the trail | | | | | Dog-Related Notes: | 2 on trail having a good time | | | | | Bugs: | | | | | | Lost and Found: | the three backpackers left behind a set of hiking poles and a glove at the hut; I tried to catch up with them on the way down but no luck; if you are one of the backpackers, I brought the items home with me (when I wanted to leave them at the X country ski parking area, somebody who definitely didn't own them, eyed the poles, so I put them in my car)--e-mail me via 'Random Group of Hikers' (meetup group); look for Monica--profile photo with gatorade and Marathon Monday sign, and I will send them to you | | |

| | | | Comments: | fun day with sticky snow; I was the only one using snowshoes for the majority of the hike; all others either in spikes or barebooting; quite a few postholes produced, esp. by the hikers starting later in the morning when I was descending; thanks to David and Randall for the fun conversation--Randall, congrats on W38-40 peaks! | | | | | Name: | M | | | | | E-Mail: | | | | | | Date Submitted: | 2017-01-22 | | | | | Link: | https:// | | | | Disclaimer: Reports are not verified - conditions may vary.
