An absolutely gorgeous day above treeline: summits in the clear under blue skies, with an undercast that lasted all day. Temps were warm with only slight breezes at the summit. There were a real grab bag of conditions today. The Ammo had a firm base with a bit of unconsolidated snow on top, above treeline it was mostly hard pack with a few drifts [I wore spikes, but should have work snowshoes and used the televators]. The spur up Monroe was mostly hardpack, with one tricky section. Crawford path was a mix of hardpack, drifts, and bony rock [snowshoes were good for both]. The Gulfside was icy near the lip of the Great Gulf [crampons]. Below Clay, and to the summit of Jefferson there were drifts, bony sections, a good bit of hardpack, and wet snow as the day warmed[ balling on microspikes]. The Jewell was bony above treeline, and well packed below.
I met Mike and Pemi on the summit of Monroe, and hiked with them to Jefferson where they continued on towards Adams.
Hopefully I'll have time to process photos, and post to Flikr this weekend. |
