Comments
Comments: Winter night project installment. With Carl and John, left the car at 4:30PM, 21F, light winds and very high broken cumulus. 25 or so cars in the lot so we expected to see a bunch finishing out. Just micros all around and top to bottom. Trail was a hard-packed highway with the occasional frozen posthole easily avoided. Saw several parties coming out before we hit the Agonies. The ledges had much ice, but it was plastic and micros did the trick. Saw a trio of lights coming down off Lafayette summit and met the three women just before the hut. They'd started up FW at 3:00 and were quite a bit uptempo from us old fogies. Great to see other folk enjoying being up high at night. Stopped in the lee of the hut to change out/layer up. Wind on the cone was moderate and we topped out at 8:15.3F, winds W-NW at 20-30. Moon was rising over the Presis, filtering through the thin layer. Brief stop in the lee to adjust layers and snack and then a steady push along the ridge. Saw another party of three before Lincoln who were in good shape, but impressed by the wind funneling up the west ravines. Ridge was a mix of bare rock, plastic ice and hardpack. We were able to do some stretches just by moonlight. Falling waters was a uniform hardpack and we motored down without disturbing the surface. All of the ledges along the river were mostly snow covered and what ice there was easily navigated. Back to the car by 11:40 and in Boston by 2:00. Thanks Carl and John for another great night out. 14 to go!
