Comments
Comments: About half an inch to an inch of light powder fell last night, refreshing things visually and helping the footing a bit.
Bunnell Notch Trail was a well packed sidewalk. Very few postholes, thank gosh. Snow depths range from 6" to perhaps 2 feet on this stretch.
Very little snow in the area immediately around the old Mt. Cabot Trail junction, but snowpack still remains. It picks up very quickly and generally ranges from 3 to 4 feet at elevation. The new snow was drifting in places up high, topping out at 6" of new snow at the moment, but still building.
We wore snowshoes roundtrip. Others Microspiked without issue, but postholed deeply whenever stepping off the trail. Since the last quarter to half a mile to the summit traditionally drifts throughout the winter, it would be wise to have snowshoes on hand. The drifting can get deep, and can completely hide the existing footbed, resulting in terrible postholing.
Noticed Microspike tracks heading south on Kilkenny Ridge toward Terrace. Did not see any recent tracks heading to The Bulge. The footbed, at least at the summit of Cabot, was hidden from the drifting.
