Good news: the KRT had a nice, packed styrofoam crunch virtually the entire way. Bad news: the trail is very choppy up to the viewpoint and somewhat beyond with a few postholes here and there. On ascent the chop actually made for many footholds which gave the calves a rest - the gait really didn't match mine but you play the hand you're dealt. On the ledges below the deck it was a bit drifty but mostly stable to walk on. The most significant ice I encountered was on the stairs to the deck. I found Microspikes to be fine today though Hillsound crampon variants might have done just a touch better. I never considered taking the snowshoes off the pack...I hope they enjoyed the ride.
A lazy late start allowed me to enjoy the sun on ascent but some high clouds moved in right around noon. Despite temps in the mid-teens there was nearly zero wind which made for a comfy trek. Not too many people out today - I only saw eight other hikers during my hike and four boarders heading up as I was going down. It was nice to meet IQuest with Marlie and chat along the way. In all a fun and quick hike...just what the doctor ordered. |
