crawford path wet and muddy down low. ice and crusty snow start appearing after the mizpah cut-off with only traces below that. at treeline trail became more icy and is a mix of ice, snow, and clean ledge headed north. the mud pits on the way were mostly frozen. conditions got easier on the ascent towards eisenhower and the loop trail was an absolute joy. the trail was completely covered with nice sticky snow varying from inches to drifts over a foot. short hike up to pierce from junction was a mix of ice and crust. a gentleman i met near the loop junction came up edmands and said it was pretty icy in its upper part.
carried a winter worthy kit. traction was much appreciated. i went with microspikes which worked really well. i wouldn't have continued to eisenhower without them. an absolutely beautiful day above treeline today. the winds were relatively light and the landscape was decidedly wintery. views from the summits were superb. on the ascent of eisenhower i had to stop and remind myself that its only october.....great to be out.
