the only intel on trail conditions of this trail was an offhand comment made by a hiker whom i chatted with last weekend on liberty. he mentioned a severely chopped up Rollins trail, so i figured that Blueberry Ledge wasn't going to be in great shape. i opted to leave the snowshoes in the car and started out in spikes. the first 1.5-2mi is pretty well packed down, so much so that i ran a lot of it on the way on the return. when the trail starts to climb, it gets choppy. and there are some deep holes. wearing snowshoes at this point won't fix anything until we get another significant snowfall. stayed in spikes until the last little outlook where i opted to change into full crampons. i could've probably muscled my way up those last few ledgey/bouldery areas in the spikes, but the crampons made me feel better and i needed the practice. some drifting on top where it levels out a bit. Rollins trail over to the summit of whiteface is indeed a choppy mess. i still had the crampons on and kept them on back down the descent over the exposed the sketchy areas where there was a bit of ice under the snow. switched back to spikes and zipped down to the car. great day, had the trail and summit all to myself, the southerly snowstorm must've kept everyone else at home. while it was cold, the wind wasn't bad at all. |
