Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Lot is not plowed. Parked on road (making sure to be within the white line).
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes, Light Traction, Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Crawford Brook is nicely bridged, you can hear the water underneath. Any other open streams were easy to step over or cross.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Good! Signs were good, evidence of a small blowdown near the top dealt with. Thanks!
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Saw three large ones having a good time. If your dog does not like steep and snowy, this is not the one for him/her.
Bugs
Bugs: Two small ones crawling across the trail in the higher elevations; they looked like a water bug, only smaller.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Lost - Dropped a dark green Teavana thermos. Found - Someone placed a black glove at the kiosk.

Comments
Comments: Nicely packed out trail (hope my description of packed powder is the right word). Did not really need snow shoes, but this is a steep trail, so they were useful for the televators. However, they did not give me enough bite further up, so I changed to microspikes. Prema used the snow shoes the whole time. This trail is becoming so smooth and with the rain/sleet/snow or whatever we're getting tomorrow, a few sections might need something stronger, like crampons.

I can't believe it took me as long as it did to get to Field. It was a little too late in the afternoon to go on to Willey. This was a good day for this; very little wind (except once when we got out of the woods and headed for the car) and nice and sunny on the little overlook near the summit. It was warmer sitting on my thermarest up there than it was at the post office window when our heat was messed up. A great day for people who normally are winter phobic.

A word about trail etiquette (although the people who read and post here probably don't do these things).... Gentlemen, just because you CAN doesn't mean you SHOULD. There were no paw prints, so dogs can not be blamed for the "territorial markings" near the kiosk. And although it did give tired old me a laugh on the way down, the heart with the arrow through it is probably not setting a good "Leave No Trace" example for little boys.
