Cannon was closed on Christmas Day and there were no posted closed signs on this publicly owned and subsidized ski area, so dozens of folks were out skinning, snowshoeing, hiking, and sledding.
I ascended the designated uphill route on the main mountain, which was generally loose granular, hard pack, and frozen granular, with some areas of blue ice, grass, and some random rocks. Steps up the observation tower are icy and snowpacked (kept snowshoes on).
I then descended over Mittersill Peak (the scrub has been further trimmed and rock blasted by the ski area, so it's lost its unique alpine feel), which was rocky due to the blasting. I avoided the active snowmaking on Mittersill, but ended up on trails that have been pretty badly damaged once again by machinery, including a revegetated place where a snowcat dug everything back down to bedrock. Also plenty of blue ice bulges from erosion issues, as well as from issues with the new snowmaking lines.
Deepest snowpack of the day was on the semi-private racing slope that was cut up the middle of Mittersill last year - up to 6 to 8 feet deep, a stark contrast to the main mountain!
Truly a shame to see what the state and special interests have done to this once beautiful backcountry area. |
