Bemis trail is unmaintained/abandoned. It was hard enough to follow in deep snow, that I could not keep it the entire way. |

I was not able to follow the old Bemis trail the entire way. I got up passed the sub-peak and to the view opening, but lost it shortly after that. I ended up bushwhacking for a fair distance in some tough snowloaded woods and deep snow.
Nancy pond trail was broken only by one or two barebooters. I used snowshoes, finding the initial trail breaking to be very manageable. The lower sections of the Bemis trail were easy to find. Snow depths increased as I worked my way up and peaked at a couple of feet of unconsolidated. The trail was obscured higher up due to deep snow and snowloaded boughs crossing the trail. At a point, more than 3/4 of the way up, I turned to bushwhacking, finding tight woods and deep snow. I didn't rejoin the trail until very close to the tower site. From the tower site I bushwhacked in tight woods to the recognized highpoint. I followed my tracks all the way back. I thought about taking another crack at getting the trail route right, but went with the sure thing in the end.
On the way back, I found a snowshoer had been by. He said he did not make it to Nancy Pond due to tough trail breaking.
For anyone who uses my tracks, I broke about 85% of the trail, but the section I bushwhacked is a little tough, so you may be best to try to get it right. |
