The sun was shining in lots of places on Wednesday but a heavy mountain fog clung to Washington and surround summits. Our goal was to summit Monroe as two of us needed it to complete the W48NH list. Trail was in great condition all the way to the hut, hard packed, minor ice, easy going. You could have easily bare booted to Gem Pool, but we wore micro-spikes and changed into crampons to hit the steep sections to the hut and beyond. Nice to catch a break from winds at hut and to change into heavier clothing for summit bid. It was tough to stay on the trail going up Monroe as visibility was poor and we lost sigh of cairns. We had at one point a short but fairly steep traverse. An ice axe (which was strapped to our packs) would have been nice but crampons held nicely on the hard pack snow. Winds were gusting at 40-50 mph but temps were not unreasonable. On the return, we found the cairns in upper elevation but lost them again so we bee lined for the hut which was a wise decision.
