Tried to kick off winter with a 4K'er. We threw on snowshoes to get through the drifts on the side of the road but the trail itself only needed traction. There was enough coverage for snowshoes but still some rocks jutting out of the snow around the pond. The snow got a little slippery as the sun warmed it so Hillsound Trail Crampon Pros were preferred over Kahtoolas.
About a half mile up Wildcat Ridge we encountered a short (<15 ft), very narrow section that caused the dogs hefty concern. Along one side was an angled slab of ice and snow covered rock and along the other was a steep and rocky drop of perhaps 20 feet. I picked my way across but inching back to report to Linda, I decided continuing wasn't prudent. Ty (dog) searched for alternatives, including some footprints that veered to the right but ended abruptly with no blazes in the distance. Only one set of tracks climbed the ledge where we turned around.
