Comments: HIked up the ski trails, which were a mix of packed snow, groomed snow and ice. Easy hiking with light traction. Then the harder work began, we broke trail from D to A (as best we could with two people!) in a crust of ice over mostly 4-6" of snow. "Mostly" because in some places we barely sank at all and other places we practically postholed in snowshoes. Add to that some awkward ankle-busting drifts and it was quite a workout across the ridge. Thankfully, most of the rocks and harder ledges are being filled in with snow, making the trip across easier that last year's icefest. Probably not the best break out ever, but with a few more parties with snowshoes bagging the Cats, a good trench will form. We couldn't detect any traffic at all coming up from Carter Notch to A.

Rough day on the ridge, but great views and another fun hike with Claudette!
